No More Paper Leave & Earning Statements (LES)

Effective 1 January 2010, there will be no more paper LES's in the Coast Guard. Neither you nor the SPO will receive hard copies of the LES in the mail.

Remember, even though you will no longer be receiving a paper LES (starting in January), it is still YOUR responsibility to review your pay and entitlements every month. You should go into Direct Access to look at your paycheck at least once a month to ensure that you getting neither over nor underpaid.

The Direct Access path to view your pay is the following:

CWO Wayne Harris is trying to get motorcycle training resources to Sector SD. If you ride motorcycles or are planning on becoming a rider, please take the time to respond to him with the following info, so he can better assist you on getting the necessary training resources:

1. Are you thinking about purchasing a motorcycle in the next 6 months?

2. Already ride? What style bike do you ride? Standard, Sport, Cruiser, Dirt-2, 3, or 4 wheels?

3. How long have you ridden? Street/Dirt

4. Have you complete the basic rider course. Date of completion.

A Reminder on Proper Uniforms from MCPO Zahand

With all of the new folks floating around and new to the San Diego area, I thought I'd better send out a reminder with a cold weather twist this time.

There have been some folks wearing the fleece liners without a jacket. That's okay if: They do not wear it outside the command (except for commuting and if not stopping). The fleece liners cannot have any patch work or embroidering of any kind on it; even if they are just sitting behind a desk and will not be seen by the general public.

Parka I is only authorized with the old style ODU's. Parka II is authorized with the new ODU's and the old style ODU's. If wearing a Parka, they need to have the rank sleeve on the center flap.

Unit Ball Caps are to have your unit only on it; i.e. Sector San Diego, USCGC Petrel, etc. No other flags, pins, etc on the ball cap. No XO, CO, CoB is not allowed either. Only pin is the "collar device" commensurate with ones rank. No miniature devices allowed (i.e. the garrison cap device is a miniature device. Not allowed).

Book bags, brief cases, etcetera must be in compliance with USCG Regs. No Sponge Bob or Scooby Doo book bags while in uniform.

No visible body piercings are allowed expect the females in their ears. If you see it somewhere else (even bulging/visible out from under the clothing) it is not authorized.

Civilian clothing: Please pass to your folks that, "Big Johnson" Tee shirts, 'Sex Kitten" tee shirts, etc. while in civilian clothes and on libo. Not authorized. See: Section 2.A.2 of the COMDTINST M1020. Quote: "While on Liberty [which means the Gas Lamp, at a bar, at a movie...] wearing or displaying clothing, jewelry, tattoos, etc. depicting drugs or advocating drug use, or of a sexual, crude, or racist nature is strictly prohibited."

Only authorized cell phone while in uniform that may be in sight are those issued by the USCG and for CG use.

Keys on the belt loop. OOD/JOOD's or while in a duty status doing the USCG's bidding. The skull and crossed bones key chains [honestly; do really need to go there].

Please take a look at the new and updated COMDTINST M1020.6F. Some things have changed.

Please keep in mind and pass to your folks. Just because the CGEX system sells it does not make it an authorized uniform item. Please also pass that the folks should dress in a conservative manner while on base and appropriate to our place of business and in accordance with military customs and courtesies. Showing up on a weekend, or what some perceive to be after hours, in inappropriate attire can be a little embarrassing to the command and to the USCG.

Seasonal Flu Shot at All Hands

Seasonal flu shots will be administered on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the All Hands from 0730 - 1100. Members should get their shot during their respective Department's allotted time for Admin verification (see All Hands agenda for specific times). Those members taking the RSWE should receive their shots as soon as they complete the exam or immediately following lunch. We need everyone to get their shot NLT 1230.

As of this posting, we will not receive the H1N1 (swine flu) shots at the All Hands. HS1 Puente will provide information on when those shots will be administered at a later date.

Members who believe that they are be medically exempt from the seasonal flu shot must provide the following information to HS1 Puente:

1) A note from your PCM requesting the exemption. HS1 Puente will then set up an appointment at NTC for review.

2) Pregnant members must provide a note verifying pregnancy. These members can receive their flu shots from their PCM or get a referral to NTC.

3) Breast feeding members will be referred back to their respective PCMs or to NTC.

If you have any concerns that you may be exempt, DON'T WAIT to try and get an exemption the day before the All Hands. Be proactive and get all necessary information ASAP.

New Weight Standards in October

The standards are changing to the Body Mass Index (BMI) and the Coast Guard standard is 27.5 for both sexes. Max body fat decreases also:

Male:
Less than 30 - 22%
Less than 40 - 24%
Over 40 - 26

Female:
Less than 30 - 32%
Less than 40 - 34%
Over 40 - 36%

During the April weigh-in everyone was made aware of their BMI and what weight they needed to achieve to ensure a BMI of 27.5 OR LESS!

LT Hedrick and LTJG McPherson are coordinating the G St. Pier cleanup site and they need your help! Look for the USCG tent by the Midway Museum. We'll provide the trash bags - you just need to bring a positive attitude and willingness to help.

When: Saturday, September 19 from 0900 - 1200
Where: G St. Pier (grassy area near the Midway Museum)
What to wear: sunscreen, hats, gloves, sturdy shoes, clothes that can get dirty

Not only will you help our oceans and marine wildlife by removing debris from our coasts and waterways, each Coastal Cleanup volunteer will get a FREE Belmont Park roller coaster ride pass or a discounted ticket for unlimited rides all day! In addition, each cleanup site will have contests and raffles for great prizes, including SeaWorld, Hornblower, Birch Aquarium and SeaLife Aquarium passes.

Have life insurance from the Coast Guard? Are your beneficiaries named? Every October it's required to ensure the documents regarding those issues are up to date in case of an incident. To help speed up your validation process in October, the links for two required documents are attached. The life insurance policy, Servicemember's Group Life Insurance Election and Certificate, (form SGLV 8286) http://www.insurance.va.gov/sgliSite/forms/8286(05-2009).pdf must be filled out even if you are declining life insurance.
